Designer PROFILE of Thony C. Anyiam.

Thony C. Anyiam is an award-winning designer, author, and inventor recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to African and Afrocentric fashion. Known for creating one-of-a-kind, high-quality designs that celebrate tradition while embracing modern style, Mr. Anyiam is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most creative and influential designers of our time.
A Nigerian-American, Anyiam studied fashion at Howard University in Washington, DC, earning a B.Sc. in Fashion Merchandising and an MFA in Fashion Design. In 1991, after gaining industry experience, he founded Anyiams Creations International, designing under the labels “Anyiams” and “Thony Anyiams.” Deeply inspired by the beauty and richness of African culture, his work merges African traditions with Western, American, Middle Eastern, and Asian influences to create a distinctive, modern Afrocentric style—a style he pioneered in 1988 after a transformative trip to Africa.
His reputation quickly grew, with designs worn by prominent figures including President Nelson Mandela, former President and Mrs. Bill Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Iyanla Vanzant, Yolanda Adams, Richard Smallwood, and Reverend Al Sharpton. In 2008, he created a line of Afrocentric evening gowns for then–First Lady Michelle Obama for consideration during President Obama’s inauguration, later launching the Alite Collection, a menswear line inspired by President Obama himself.
Anyiam’s creations have also appeared on screen and in top publications worldwide. In 1997, his work was featured in the film Contact starring Angela Bassett and Jodie Foster. His designs have graced the pages of Brides, Modern Bride, Essence, Upscale, Jet, Black Elegance, and Signature Bride, among many others. He became the first Black designer featured in Brides and Modern Bride in the mid-1990s and the first African designer interviewed by the Associated Press in 1994.
Beyond print, his work has been showcased on ABC World News Saturday, CBS Broadcast House Live, and numerous international outlets. He has participated in fashion shows hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus, National Urban League, and other prestigious platforms, presenting signature pieces such as Afrocentric bridal gowns, tuxedos, vests, beachwear, clergy robes, and academic regalia.
In 2008, Anyiam published his first book, Jumping the Broom in Style: A Collection of Style and Information for the Entire Wedding Party, which remains a reference for couples and wedding planners alike. His creative pursuits also extend into invention, with patents pending for devices such as AngelSaves, designed to assist stranded motorists, and the ThermoA Wristwatch, an innovative audio-enabled watch for individuals with visual or hearing impairments.
As a true innovator, Thony C. Anyiam continues to expand his influence—whether through fashion, writing, or invention—carrying forward his mission to bring the richness and sophistication of African culture to the global stage.
